Introduction to Web Site Promotion

|
|
Once you have designed your web site, you have an almost unlimited means to expose
your business to thousands of visitors. However, you must realise
that millions of businesses across the world have exactly the same aim - that is
to ensure that their website is seen by as many visitors as possible. If you do not promote your web site, it will eventually list on some search engines
and you will receive an occasional visitor, from time-to-time. Think of how your
business would survive if nobody was ever told of its existence! There are, however,
relatively inexpensive ways to solve this problem and to start attracting visitors
to your web site. |

|
Things you can do to Promote your Site
|
Website visitors generally arrive in one of three ways:
- by typing in a website address;
- by following a link from another site; or
- by finding a site on a search engine.
|
|
You can attract these visitors (see left):
- by above-the-line advertising;
- by setting up reciprocal links; and
- by search engine submission and AdWords.

Advertise your Site
|
|
Ask for Reciprocal Links
|
| "Above the line" promotion of your business includes your advertisements, business
cards, brochures and product catalogues. Your web address should appear in all of
these media. Don't forget to include it on your letterhead and also on your statements
and invoices. Ensure that your email address is linked to your domain and is not
a generic ISP or free address. Many visitors type the domain name portion of an
email address into a browser to try and find out more about the company sending
the email. |
|
Web site visitors migrate from web site to web site looking for information. One
of the finest methods of attracting visitors is to have a link to your site on another
more popular site. Search engines regard links to your site as the most important
indicator of your site's worth when evaluating where your site should be listed.
Talk to your clients, suppliers and friends and try to convince them to list your
site on their sites. Sometimes, quid pro quo in the form of a reciprocal
link from your site to theirs is all that is required. |

Enable your Statistics
|
 |
|
We provide comprehensive statistical analysis of
our web sites with three-dimensional graphs, tables and maps showing which country
and even which city your visitors live in. This service is free, all you need to
do is ask us to enable it and you will receive a user name and password that will
allow you to browse through your website statistics yourself. It is very difficult
to determine whether your web site is working for you if you have no means of determining
whether anyone has visited. Our statistics are very comprehensive and it is worthwhile
to take a little time to explore them and to learn how to use them to track your
web site's progress. |
